Facts about Medlar Fruit (Mespilus germanica)











Medlar is commonly used in Medlar Jelly and wine. It is said that it is perhaps being cultivated for about 3000 years. The name Medlar has Latin origin which means German. Its root can be found in south Eastern Europe and south west Asia. It belongs to the rose family. It’s color ranges from Red to Brown and the fruit has a diameter of upto 2 inches.



Scientific name of this fruit is Mespilus germanica. Both the tree and the fruit are called medlar. It can be cultivated in mild winters and warm summer conditions. It’s tree is generally 26ft tall.

The fruit has to be softened before it can be eaten. Hence, it has to be eaten in rotten form. Its taste is closer to the apple cause. It can be eaten in raw form if bletted. It is also used as dessert known as medlar cheese.
